Project Rwenzori

In 2010, Hima Cement commissioned a new production line, with adequate installed capacity to meet the growing demand. The new line came with state-of-the-art technology that not only gave the highest quality production of cement products but did so under conditions friendly to the environment.

Key Milestones/ Achievements

In 2010, Hima Cement commissioned a new environment-friendly state of the art factory in Kasese, worth US$120 Million, which increased production capacity from 350,000 tons to 850,000 tons per year. This helped to move Uganda to self-sufficiency and facilitate supply of quality cement to the entire East African market and creating massive employment.

The factory came with an installed bag filter technology that limits dust emissions from the system; a greatest achievement towards controlling emissions and together with the energy efficient 5-stage Precalciner kiln, guarantee an environmentally friendly plant.

To further reduce carbon emissions to within globally accepted environmental standards, the new state of the art plant brings to play a high quality product which in its manufacture uses more addition / extenders hence increasing quarry life.

The new cement production technology has environmental benefits that include a reduction in use of raw materials, reduced energy consumption and reduced green house emissions because of the advanced gas conditioning tower.

Besides, to mitigate the effects of climate change, Hima Cement is at the forefront of several initiatives aimed at conserving the environment. The company has been substituting heavy fuel oil with coffee and rice husks for burning of kiln which greatly reduces carbon emissions.
